The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) has recently published the report <\/span>\u201cThe Next Production Revolution: Implications for Governments and Business\u201d<\/span><\/em>, in which it highlights the potential impact of 3D printing.<\/p>\n

According to this report “In the next 5 to 10 years we will probably see 3D printing replace a lot of part machining equipment.”<\/p>\n

The study also reviews the different 3D printing methods, from FDM techniques to Polyjet to SLS.<\/p>\n

An international organization in search of common solutions
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since its founding in 1960, the OECD has worked to seek solutions to common problems and propose international policies among member countries.<\/p>\n

Made up of 35 countries, including Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France, Australia and Japan, the OECD meets to exchange information and harmonize policies that help maximize economic growth.<\/p>\n

3D printing vs. traditional techniques<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the presentation of this report, the main advantage of 3D printing has been highlighted: the amount of material that is no longer wasted in the production process<\/strong>, compared to traditional manufacturing.<\/p>\n

According to the researchers of the study, this advantage has a direct bearing on the environmental impact of the process itself.<\/p>\n

This highlights the main reasons for choosing 3D printing over other manufacturing techniques.<\/p>\n

“If the goal is to create lightweight, small-batch, low-cost parts with complex geometric features, additive manufacturing is likely to be a better solution.”<\/p>\n

As the report states, 3D printing does not have the power to solve environmental concerns in the manufacturing process. However, this technology could become a leading player in a more sustainable supply chain.<\/p>\n
